There are times when you’ll stumble across an old image, maybe you’ll find it in a desk drawer, a shoe box, or a frame in the back of a closet. Maybe it’s an old family member, a great grandparent, or a childhood photo of yourself. It’s torn, weathered, cracked, or has water damage. You decide you’d like to have it restored and proudly displayed. It’s time to call Newsome’s Studio. Fast, affordable, and accurate, they can restore your old photos like new again.
The Old Photo Repair Process…
“Back in the day,” when film ruled the photography world, in order to restore an old photo, you simply photographed your torn or weathered photo with a medium or large format film camera to create a new negative. Dyes were applied to the negative to repair some parts of the image and a new print was made. Then pencils, dyes, and paint (via “airbrush”) were added to the new print to finalize the repair work. Then, once again, a new negative was created by photographing the repaired image. From that second negative, as many new prints as needed could be ordered from the lab.
This was a long, tedious, and expensive process, and wasn’t always very accurate, but once the process was complete, there were no “re-dos,” you couldn’t back up and fix something if you spotted a flaw – it was pretty much a one-way street. We were forced to rely a lot on trained, talented artists, and they were hard to come by – and EXPENSIVE!
The NEW Photo Repair Process…
That process changed with the advent of digital and the invention of Photoshop. Now, an old worn out photograph in need of restoration, can be scanned on a high resolution flatbed scanner, or photographed with a high resolution digital camera. Either process will result in a large digital file on the computer. From there, Photoshop is the new “airbrush,” and the artwork is applied on the digital file. Once completed, prints are ordered from our professional lab for our clients.
The digital process is now faster, more efficient, and far less expensive that it was in the film days. And if we discover a flaw in the repair work, no problem… we can go right back into the computer and correct it without having to start from scratch. In short, there has never been a better time to repair your old photos than now.
